Demonstrations with Master Yun: The 6 Basic Forms of Shang style Xing Yi Quan

Welcome to our educational series “Demonstrations with Master Yun”. In this series, we will introduce you to the traditional Chinese martial arts styles and forms that are taught in our studio.

Xing means shape, and Yi means intent. Xing Yi Quan is one of the three main Chinese internal martial arts (along with Tai Chi Quan and Ba Gua Zhang). Shang style Xing Yi is a difficult style to master. Training, in the beginning, can be quite harsh and repetitive, however, this will develop an irresistible force in the trainee. The attack, which is always forward and in front, does not concern itself with the opponent’s response. Instead, it overwhelms them with the power generated from being grounded and utilizing its five basic movements: Pi Quan (Splitting), Zuan Quan (Drilling), Beng Quan (Crushing), Pao Quan (Pounding / Exploding), Heng Quan (Crossing). Each movement corresponds to one of the five elements in Chinese philosophy and one of the five internal organs. The progression of training follows a specific order, based on the succession between the elements or their balance of power.

Shang style is different than the other Xing Yi Quan styles because it adds another form, Ying Zhuo (Eagle Seize) 鹰捉, which is considered the mother form of Shang Style Xing Yi Quan. The benefits of learning Shang style are its martial applications, as well as, the promotion of good health for the trainee.

In each of the sections below, you will see a demonstration and application videos for each form. These are meant to showcase the forms in their entirety, as well as, demonstrate what you will learn in our studio. As always you can reach us at info@masteryun.com or join us on our Facebook page.
